OK, I know we're obviously going to want to redo all the weapon/voice sounds that are ingame at the moment (those relevant to our mod anyway), but I was thinking about adding a few more.
At the moment, if someone hits t/q a menu comes up with a bunch of speech options... If they've spotted something, it plays a sound to the whole team over the radios if I remember correctly... And it's the same with some of the other commands - some are squad only... Anyway, I was thinking, what if we were to add some that the character said, and *weren't* broadcast over the radio. Instead, they'd be 3D sounds placed in the game world - rather like when you hear enemy soldiers using their voice commands (that dreaded "Fire in the hole"). They'd be a series of other commands though, a short list:
"Open fire men!" - Something along these lines. It'd be a LOUD command so that everyone close by could hear it... Useful for squads ambushing the enemy - they wouldn't have to rely on microphones or chat, and this would help them to time their attacks perfectly, so that on the leader's command, the WHOLE SQUAD opened up on the unsuspecting enemy. This would also have an effect for said ambushees - it'd be a pretty cool touch to be stealthily wandering along, keeping to the shadows in a night map... All of a sudden you hear "OPEN FIRE" and your squad mates start dropping around you as gunfire lights up the street...
"Flare out" - said when a flare is launched. Useful for getting people's attention when you want to throw a flare as a pointer
"What's that?!" - again, something along those lines. Used like a "spotted" command, but for flares, explosions, dark figures moving in the night, etc. Alerts the people around you that something's going on.
"Cover me" - loud enough that a player a good few meters away can hear. Used when you want to move from one bit of cover to the next, telling the support gunner of the squad to lay down some fire
Any other ideas would be good - I think we could make pretty effective use of this. It would also help squad-based play alot, if they could be ordered about more by their squad leader; in BF2, I only tend to see people working together really well if they're in a clan and are making use of microphones and stuff. Otherwise, squads tend to be ignored. This would help players who didn't necessarily know eachother to work together more easily.
Yer there all good ideas. It would be a good asset to the game being able to "shout" things like "open fire". Perhaps things like that should be squad leaders only, whereas things such as "cover me" would be all units.
Well, obviously some would be specifically for squad leaders - orders and things. Anything that's gonna get a squad to work as a more organised unit rather than just run-and-gun one-man-army type of play.
A few others might be "Flank left/right" (SL only), and "Behind us!" (all players)...
Since the game's rated 16+, I think we could have rather more realistic sounds than is customary in battlefield - although a well trained soldier such as in bf2(142) might often say "I need a medic here", the conscripts involved in our wars would probably be far less composed. "Sh*t, I'm bleeding" and the like wouldn't be out of place.
Perhaps but I dont think swearing is strictly nessarsary. If you think about it, the 16+ rule is never followed. Generals yelling and cursing god would be good however.
i happen to agree with halfdark here, personally i is the parents fault if they allow their children to play 16+games...and anyway we are using blood in here arnt we...and other things that make this an over16 game..so swearing isnt out of order
I didnt say out of order, I said nessarsary. Anyway it won't come up as they would have new swear words by then. We can invent some that fit the story and sound good
But we would run the risk of it sounding distinctly silly. If they're going to speak in English otherwise, it would be silly to avoid words because they might not be suitable for younger audiences (younger audiences for whom it is illegal to play the game). We wouldn't want them everywhere all the time, but I think a degredation in the language of these poorly trained, fatigued and battleweary soldiers would add a more gritty touch. It just strikes me as wrong that you can be playing a game in which people* get shot, die, blow stuff up etc, yet swearing is often considered more worse than any of that. It would be there on a real battleground, it should be there in ours.
I like the idea of opening this o the public as a sort of competition, Red Alert 2: Apocolypse Rising mod for command and conquer renegade have been doing a similar thing recently and its been very successful and there have been loads of amazing voice entries.
