    Fancy helping making a game?

Okay guys, I've been mulling over a little project I came up with the other day while I was meant to be revising. I don't want to reveal too much, because I hope it's going to be quite an exciting little project, but I thought some of you might be interested - given that you're into modding anyway...

What I'll say for now is that it's going to be a 2D-type game. It'll probably be programmed in Java, because that's what I know: this means it ought to be cross-platform, and there's the possibility of it becoming a browser-based game, although that's not what I have in mind for it. It's going to be very psycologically based. The actual gameplay will be very basic indeed, but it's going to require some very stylized artwork - I'm not necessarily talking about 3D models (it's a 2D game!), rather sprites and images.

    What I'll be needing:
    *
    • One, maybe two graphic artists. I'll need a few examples of prior art - if the artwork isn't of the very highest standard, this will detract immensly from the game, given that one of the main features is the stylized nature.[/*:m:l29bgy91]
    • Maybe two sound engineers. I'm going to need some sound effect - and they're going to be some fairly strange asks. Bear in mind what I said about the game being fairly psycological in nature. If there's a soundtrack, it will have to be a very backgroundy, atmospheric and tense affair. It's more the actual in-game effects that are important.[/*:m:l29bgy91]
    • Play testers. This is what I expect more people will be interested in - I'll need around 5-10 play testers. The aim is to find bugs, complain about problems, give feedback, etc. I've a fairly clear idea of exactly what's wanted from the game, so there probably won't be that much room for ideas for new features, but if it's good and it fits, then of course I'll think about it.[/*:m:l29bgy91]
Note: This is intended to be a SUMMER project for me - I intend to start work on the code around the end of June. Depending on how that goes, I'll let the art-folk know what's needed, probably around the second week of July. After that, I want to get everything DONE by half way through August, and then start play-testing; this is a VERY tight schedule for anyone who wants to be involved, and there will be quite* alot of pressure to deliver - deadlines and such. For those of you wanting to be involved in playtesting, you need to make yourselves available fairly regularly - I'll email you a week in advance to organise play-testing sessions. Expect it around mid August. I'd like to have this polished up and finished by the time I go back to Uni in October.

    If you're interested:

Drop me an email: 'james' dot 'p' dot 'elford' a*t 'goo gle male' dot 'com' (I know this is a bizarre way to spell my email address out, but I really do hate spiders).

ps. (I sent this post for moderation to check that it was all okay, and coming back I remembered something I left out):

For the play testing, there will be a strict over-18's policy. I know this seems harsh, and everyone here probably has been playing games rated too old for them since before they can remember, but the nature of the content is very much adult, and I wouldn't be comfortable (or on sturdy ground legally speaking) distributing it to children. That doesn't mean you can't get involved if you're not 18 yet, but it does mean you can't do so as a tester. It also doesn't necessarily mean you won't be able to play the finished product, since it'll be available as a free download online.

    Word, homedog.
