OK, this is a game idea I've been toying with for a while now, and wanted to ask other people's thoughts...
Take Gears of War. For those of you who don't know it, it's the first ever UE3 game, it's on the 360. Post-apocalyptic earth, 3rd person, VERY cool indeed. You're a big guy (picture the juggernauts from UT2k*) and you shoot stuff. Good gameplay, better graphics.
Now think about Shadow Grounds. Again, those who don't know it... Well, it's basically a top-down shooter with a very modern engine. Well, it was modern this time 2 years ago - looks rather dated now.
Now cross these idea's, and make it a little more like doom. And battlefield. So basically, you have a top-down shooter, but not quite top-down. Half way between TD and 3rdP. Also, there's alot of dark areas on the maps - you can only see where your character *would* be able to see; those places that your camera can see but the character can't would be blanked out by an *awesome* shader effect; you'd have some idea of what's there, but you couldn't get ready to aim up a headshot or anything. Doom style maps, very very solid gameplay. Oh, these "doom style maps" are then taken and made multiplayer-only - I can't be bothered to think about this game having a singleplayer. Camera moves shadowgrounds-style, and you can't see much behind you at all. Add gears-style close combat (not quite the same though; sort of a cross between gears and halo) and make the maps non-linear. Not as open as battlefield, but there are always several passages down which you could go. Kinda like fear Ontop of all that, add the battlefield game mode. Remember these are indoor maps.
I think it could be very cool, with the right application of graphics and post-processing on the visuals. What do you guys think?
What you have described is almost exactly Fallout, especially Fallout Tactics.* Post-Apoc game, isometic viewpoint, exceedingly violent, mixture of RPG and action game.* It uses a probability-based turn-based system, so it's not exactly the same, but it is pretty damn similar.* And Fallout 3 will be even closer to your idea.
Oh dear god I really must install fallout. From the look of it though, it's more out doors, and relies less on *awesome* effects etc... Also, this game would rely heavily on its physics engine for interesting things like the Sonic Blaster (used to knock schizznit over)... Smaller rooms, more of the fps-whoever-reacts-first-is-likely-to-come-out-much-better style as well. But rpg elements would make it fantasmic. *HD decides to go check out fallout 3*
