    Browser Wars

I came across this free online browser benchmark from FutureMark and decided to have some fun with the browsers I had installed. I thought it could be interesting to track the changes in browser speed over the next few months as the browser wars are fiercer than ever before.

August 2011: AMD Turion II 2.5 GHz, 2GB RAM, Win7 Pro

Personally my favourite browser is Chrome these days purely because of the quicker startup and browsing to that of Firefox 3,4 & 5 and the minimal UI compared to Opera. It is also worth mentioning that Opera originally just behind Chrome but I re-ran the test and it came out a little above so I think they're pretty neck and neck.

Can anyone improve on my benchmarks? Which is your favourite browser and why?

In the Democratic Computer of Fuchs we had a vote for which browser was the best.

Seems Opera got 100% of the votes! That said, she was the only candidate.

Scoring higher than your Opera, Naga! I could try Firefox but haven't updated it in.. over a year. And IE is just sitting there since early 2010 not doing anything. Those are just back up browsers basically. If something doesn't properly function in Opera I fire up IE or FF and see if it works. Usually it does. Overall I just enjoy Opera much more than any browser I ever tried. Takes some time to get used to but once you know how it works, it's so smooth. It's quick, has a nice spelling corrector, looks fancy and that speed dial thing is brilliant.

I must admit I didn't try very hard to get to know it - I just got irritated by some of the basic functions (like auto filling of forms) requiring an extension. Some things like speed-dial are available in FF and Chrome anyway.

As it's you though Fuchs I'll download it again and try it on my home PC rather than work one.

Nope afraid I failed again - can't say exactly what it was but it just didn't feel right. Chrome is as fast and must smoother.

    Re: Browser Wars

If it had xmarks and Adblock Plus I'd be able to cope but the continuous barrage of ads which the Opera Ad-blocker completely fails to hide and then my bookmarks not being syndicated was the final straw.

Ironically I actually quite like the UI once I'd found a suitable skin but the lack of comparability with other cross-browser plugins is a real shame.

You'll be pleased to hear I re-ran the benchmark and Opera pulled ahead to 8970 which is pretty decisive when you consider Chrome is now down in the 1000-2000 range for some completely unknown reason.

    Re: Browser Wars

    How is Opera Apple?

"Opera is a web browser and Internet suite developed by Opera Software."
"Opera does not come packaged with any desktop operating system."
"Opera Software ASA (OSE: OPERA) is a Norwegian software company, primarily known for its Opera family of web browsers."

I fail to see your logic.

The other logic could be that Opera is only design and not features. Truth is, Opera developed most special things you find in browsers these days.
