    Naga's hardware woes

I've posted before about my 5570 dying suddenly. This afternoon another issue appeared. After restarting my computer (can't remember why) the machine enterered a restart loop which after the 6th time I ended by turning off the main power supply.

I waited about 5 minutes before trying again and the same thing happened. After waiting and trying again a few times it started up fine after I adjusted the angle of the VGA cable into my GPU.

What confuses me is why a faulty monitor connection caused such a problem, surely it must be co-incidence? It stuck me that it was more likely that the GPU was overheating but if tha's true why would the problem only surface during restart?

I found a neat little Windows 7 sidebar gadget which shows your GPU stats. It's very customisable and automatically detects your manufacture.

    Download Page (translated from German)

My GPU is idling at 57oC which is pretty good I think considering it has no fan and my CPU is at 43oC with fans

Which leaves me more confused than ever about the cause of the restart loop!

Since you "adjusted" the VGA-cable (which was strapped to your GPU already, from what I understand), your GPU could have slipped out its PCI-slot/not a tight seal, causing the restart-loops to occur; and once you adjusted the previously mentioned VGA-cable, your GPU could have slipped back onto the PCI-port to form a tight seal.

    Just a theory.

I like that theory - you might have just nailed the issue.

I'm going to try my dead GPU in a mates machine to see if it is indeed broken before sending it back to overclockers.co.uk

Nice tool! Installed it, always good to know the temp of it, and the official name.

Mine goes as ATI Radeon HD 5700 and it's average temp is 35-40. Pretty good.

This card rules to be honest, Napoleon Total War looks amazing.

Your just making me miss my 5770 more now

After the exam season is over I'm planning to get NTW - I always enjoyed Rome and the MTW2 Demo so I think it's probably time to catch up

Are there any real differences between all those numbers? 5770 sounds so much better.

I think there's only two GPUs in the 5700 series. The 5750 and 5770.

I honestly don't know the difference between the two. I got my on special offer otherwise I would probably wouldn't have even got a 5700 series at all.

On a lighter note the supplier has agreed to take the GPU back for testing and replacement! Now for the long wait...
