Following on from General Naga's comment about the story, I have a theory as to what it might be -- stop me if I go off reservation!
Over 100 years ago a man named Jacob Hargreave came into contact with some fossils of an extinct civilisation that possessed technology far beyond our own. Their technology was both organic and mechanical in nature, but something consistent with the stories of alien life in movies such as War of the Worlds. Then in later years during World War II, after extensive study, he discovered that this civilisation wasn't extinct after all and wasn't alien either, lying dormant following the last ice age that sealed them away, beneath the planet's surface or inside some of the Earth's most sacred places for thousands of years. Finally discovering an organic specimen whose cryogenic suspension had failed, analyses showed they were similar to Cephalopods particularly around the jaw-structure.
Hence, he designated them as the Ceph.
Realising this species was a threat to humanity and would someday awaken; reclaiming what was rightfully theirs, he founded CryNet Systems and developed many technologies including medicine, weaponry, advanced robotics and other fields of study, leapfrogging human science using the research he had obtained from the Ceph's organic machines. During the course of this he also found a way to extend his lifespan using their biotechnology (something that allowed them to live almost indefinitely), but lacked the expertise necessary to stop the aging process of human cells.
It wasn't until the late 21st Century that human science evolved enough to construct the Nanosuit, the pinnacle of CryNet's weapons tech, adapting the Ceph's armour technology in a way that could be manufactured for the human in mind. Naturally the US Government aided in this program, selecting only the top soldiers to operate a billion-dollar/suit weapons system... but the overall goal of the project was a way to provide humanity with a combat chassis that mimicked the ability for its wearer to stop aging altogether; an exoskeleton that fused directly with their skin and became an extension of their immune system. In other words, the perfect battlesuit to fight the Ceph that would also make Hargreave immortal.
When Major Laurence "Prophet" Barnes realised he and his team had been sacrificed, solely to determine the modifications needed to complete the Nanosuit, he broke ranks and stole the prototyp, but knew he couldn't wear it himself. He needed someone willing to defend Humanity from the Ceph, but also compatible with its organic technology. This is when he found Alcatraz, a marine whose entire team was wiped out during the US' attempted counter-attack when the Ceph launched their invasion of the Big Apple.
Now Alcatraz will use the suit to stop them, though he can never again remove it, for it's the only thing keeping him alive...
